The Master of Law Program, Faculty of Law, Diponegoro University (FH Undip) once again held a General Lecture on June 5, 2025 in room P.112 of the Master of Law Program, FH Undip Pleburan with the theme “The Future of International Economic Law in the Age of Climate Crisis”. This event was opened by the Secretary of the Master of Law Program, Dr. Adya Paramita Prabandari, S.H., M.L.I., M.H. by presenting speakers Prof. Shawkat Alam (Professor of International and Environmental Law at Macquarie Law School), and Prof. Markus Wagner, (Professor of Law at the Faculty of Business and Law, Wollongong, Australia) The MC and moderator were Mrs. Anggita Doramia Lumbanraja, S.H., M.H. (Lecturer in the Basics of Law and Law & Society, Faculty of Law, Undip).
This event was attended by all students of class by course 1, class of 2024 from the concentrations of Criminal Law Reform, State Law, Economic and Business Law, and International Law.
In his presentation, Prof. Shawkat Alam explored the complex interactions between trade and environmental law, with a focus on sustainability and development goals. He also highlighted the legal challenges in balancing trade and environmental action as seen in cases including Chinese raw materials and seal products.
Meanwhile, Prof. Markus Wagner said that there is an urgency for cooperation between countries to reach agreements with large countries. In his explanation, it was also stated that US President Donald Trump prefers a bilateral approach with developing countries because he believes that the United States has a strong bargaining position. By avoiding multilateral frameworks such as the WTO, Donald Trump reduces what is considered an unfair advantage that other countries have. Although this strategy gives the US more control in one-on-one negotiations. Small transformations such as the implementation of QRIS can have an impact on other countries, and this is interesting to observe because other countries often have to adjust to manage the situation. The United States also often uses tariffs as a tool to punish certain countries, but sometimes the impact actually increases the price of goods and people cannot afford to buy imported products.
It is hoped that Indonesia and other developing countries can continue to make adjustments so that they are able to compete in all matters related to international trade, both in terms of regulations and legal culture, so that developing countries can synchronize existing standards in the international scope.
The presence of Prof. Shawkat Alam and Prof. Markus Wagner at the Master of Law, Faculty of Law, Undip is an important momentum for the entire academic community who have the opportunity to gain new insights from international and environmental law and international economic governance, along with their relation to international peace and security. In addition, the presence of these two professors from leading universities abroad can be the first step in creating positive synergy between the Master of Law, Faculty of Law, Undip and other educational institutions around the world.
